Homemade Chai

A heart warming blend of spices, this homemade chai is sugar free, preservative free and seriously easy to make. Once you have all of the required spices in your cupboard you can easily make this recipe again and again to top up your chai supply.

What is Chai?

Traditionally known as Masala Chai, an Indian tea beverage, the drink has certainly gained popularity in western culture over the recent years as an alternative to coffee. I often see people enjoying a chai latte at my local café in the afternoon, assumedly to avoid a late afternoon caffeine hit.

The base of chai is usually made with black tea (which does contain caffeine). Spices are then added with a sweetener and milk to complete the drink. There are now a lot of chai blends available that are actually caffeine free, like this recipe you are about to make…

Why make your own chai?

Personally, I think the best reason to make homemade chai is so that you know EXACTLY what is going into the blend. Unfortunately, most pre-prepared chai blends contain sugar and preservatives and not just a little sugar, chai can be a huge sugar hit if you are not careful!

Another reason you might to choose to make your own homemade chai is to save money, particularly if it is not something you will be using all of the time. I was buying a pre-prepared chai blend a few years ago and it was quite expensive as it was a “gourmet” brand that was sugar and crap free. I found that I would use it once or twice and then all of a sudden, the chai was past its expiry date. I would end up throwing the container out and sure enough, a few weeks later I was wishing I had some chai in the cupboard to make a latte or add to a recipe. That is actually where the inspiration for this recipe came from, I thought why not make my own? Now you can too!

Homemade Chai Ingredients

There are many different combinations that can be used to make a blend of chai, however after playing around with a few different combinations, this is the blend I have come to love most.

  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg
  • Cardamom
  • Ginger
  • Allspice

How to make Homemade Chai

  • Measure out each spice into a bowl or glass jar. Tip: Use a funnel for less mess.
  • Use a whisk to thoroughly combine the spice blend in a bowl or seal your glass jar with the lid and shake thoroughly to mix the spices.
  • Store in a glass jar in the cupboard and add to boiling water and heated milk to make a chai latte.

How to make your own Chai Latte

On a cold winter’s day, there is no denying that a hot chai latte feels like a big warm hug from someone you love. The good news is that you can use this chai blend to make your own latte at home which means you can make it healthy and to your liking.

  1. Measure out 2 tsp chai blend into a mug.
  2. Add a sweetener of your choice such as stevia or monk fruit for sugar free or honey/maple syrup.
  3. Add a small amount of boiling water, maybe one to two tablespoons and stir well.
  4. Heat and/or froth milk of your choice, I use this milk frother at home and love it.
  5. Pour heated milk over the chai blend, sprinkle with a little bit of cinnamon (cinnamon sugar if you wish).
  6. Sit back, relax and enjoy!

How to store Homemade Chai

I like to store my chai in a glass container. You can clean an old nut butter or jam jar, removal the label and use that or alternatively I love to have a few of these glass jars in my kitchen for storing various powders and jams.
