Raw Brownies | Refined Sugar Free

Chocolate brownies that don’t require any baking? Yep that’s right! These delicious little raw brownies taste like a Reese’s peanut butter cup in brownie form.

Raw desserts were all the rage a little while back, when veganism was a trendy new health thing. And while veganism is not my thing and raw desserts are not my specialty by any means, I do think they are great. Particularly during a hot Australian summer when you do not want to turn the oven on but still want a delicious sweet treat. Now that is when these delicious raw brownies really come in handy. Raw desserts can also be great to make with kids as there is no risk of burning around the oven.

Gluten free, Dairy Free, Refined Sugar Free Raw Brownies

If healthy chocolate recipes are your thing, then you need to get down with these healthy chocolate crackles. Similar to this recipe in that there is no baking required and they will be ready in less than 30 minutes (if you set in the freezer). OH and you only need four ingredients. MAKE THEM NOW is my advice.

Is Maple Syrup a Healthy Sweetener?

I am often asked this question and the answer is, it depends. When I was suffering with SIBO and Candida in my gut, maple syrup was not a healthy sweetener for me at that time. Even though maple syrup is refined sugar free, it is still sugar and will provide a food source to candidate in the gut which is not ideal. I truly believe ‘health’ is individual so what is good for one person may not be good for the next and what is good for me at this point in my life may not always be good or the right thing for optimal health.

Having now done extensive work on healing my gut and clearing SIBO and candidate (insert celebratory dance), I like to use maple syrup as a natural, refined sugar free sweetener.

Ingredients for this recipe

Nut Butter – Use peanut butter for a more intense PB taste or almond butter for a more neutral brownie taste. Whichever nut butter you choose, check the label and look for one that is made with 100% nuts (maybe a little bit of salt added) but nothing else.

Maple Syrup – Always make sure you are buying pure maple syrup and not maple flavoured syrup which is filled with artificial sweeteners and preservatives.

Almond Meal – or almond flour works great in this recipe. I tend to use blanched almond meal which has a light colour.

Cacao Powder – You could replace this with unsweetened cocoa powder.

Collagen – You can make this recipe without collagen. I love adding collagen to my recipes as it dissolves and can often add more of a moist texture to things.

How to make Raw Brownies

  • Combine nut butter, maple syrup and almond milk until smooth.
  • Add all dry ingredients and combine into a thick dough.
  • Divide the dough between 6 silicone or lined muffin moulds and set aside.
  • Prepare the fudge topping by combining peanut butter, coconut oil, maple syrup and caramel protein.
  • Top each brownie cup with the peanut butter fudge mixture. Smooth over the top using the back of a spoon.
  • Refrigerate the raw brownies overnight or for at least two hours to set (you can speed up this process by using the freezer).
  • Keep the raw brownies stored in the fridge as they will be too soft at room temperature.
